The tentpole Netflix series Stranger Things is one of the most popular, most talked about, and most referenced shows on TV. When Season 4 launched in Spring of 2022, there were over 250 million hours streamed in its opening days alone – topping one billion hours watched by the season’s finale! The show is wildly successful and our creative team was thrilled to design augmented reality group chat experiences as part of both Netflix’s Stranger Things Day celebration and the Season 4 premiere! (Did we mention we’re huge fans?!)
Working closely with Netflix’ Global Creative Marketing team, we recreated a number of the show’s signature environments for users to immerse themselves in when chatting with friends, each rich with animated and interactive elements to explore and easter eggs to discover throughout… both in the Real World and, with the rotation of their phone, the Upside Down.
From Hawkins Lab and Los Angeles, to the Creel House and Russian tundra, each caller who joins the Stranger Things 4 group chat effect will find themselves immersed in one of the show’s primary set locations reminiscent of a movie poster coming to life. Roiling storm clouds, lightning flashes, windblown trees, malfunctioning lights, swirling demobats and debris, even the mind flayer are all part of the interactive video chat experience… and be sure to keep watch for an easter egg surprise triggered by facial expressions!

The event that set off everything is commemorated annually as Stranger Things Day and, for its third occurrence, our team created an immersive 360º view of Hawkins, Indiana as an interactive mobile experience.

In Summer of 2022, A24 Films debuted Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, a one-of-a-kind, witty, and endearing story about a little character created by director Dean Fleischer-Camp and actress/comedian Jenny Slate (who also lends Marcel’s distinctly lovable voice). As long-time fans of the Marcel stop motion shorts (watched by over 50 million people on YouTube), we jumped at the opportunity to bring Marcel to you through an augmented reality group chat experience.
The Marcel shorts and feature film take the form of mockumentaries, and it’s the dialogue between Fleischer-Camp and Marcel, along with his adventurous encounters in the human world, that make you laugh-out-loud and, at times, tear-up.
Marcel may be small but his wisdom and tenacity outsize his physique at every turn. Taking our clue from the memorable kitchen scene in the film, our team collaborated with A24 to recreate Marcel’s “Honey Walk” – a happenstance moment of opportunity that occurs when a jar of honey falls off a shelf and shatters on the ground, the sticky substance allowing Marcel to scale walls and reach new heights
